Halloween is one of the biggest events on the American holiday calendar, and it’s definitely one of the most fun. On the evening of Halloween, you can see kids wandering around in spooky costumes, pumpkins carved to look like monster faces, and scary movies will show at cinemas.

But where did all this come from? Like lots of modern celebrations, the traditions go back hundreds of years. The word ‘Halloween’ means ‘holy evening’, and is of a Christian origin. You see, some historians believe that Halloween is based on Christian traditions from the 10th century. October 31st to November 2nd formed a three-day event called Allhallowtide, which was a time to remember the dead. Other historians believe that Halloween comes from the old Celtic tradition of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. During this festival, people would put on masks, visit houses and ask for food.

In reality, both of these beliefs have shaped the modern traditions of Halloween. When kids dress up as monsters and ghosts and go trick-or-treating, it relates to those old beliefs about dead spirits. Activities like carving jack-o’-lanterns from pumpkins and apple bobbing relate to the end of the harvest season. Cultural traditions are often like this, mixing histories and beliefs.

So there you have it: a very brief description of Halloween. Try to learn a bit more about Halloween customs this month. Some of them are a lot of fun!

One story about Jack, an Irishman, who was not allowed into Heaven because he was stingy with his money. So he was sent to hell. But down there he played tricks on the Devil (Satan), so he was kicked out of Hell and made to walk the earth forever carrying a lantern.

Well, Irish children made Jack's lanterns on October 31st from a large potato or turnip, hollowed out with the sides having holes and lit by little candles inside. And Irish children would carry them as they went from house to house begging for food for the village Halloween festival that honored the Druid god Muck Olla. The Irish name for these lanterns was "Jack with the lantern" or "Jack of the lantern," abbreviated as " Jack-o'-lantern" and now spelled "jack-o-lantern." The traditional Halloween you can read about in most books was just children's fun night. Halloween celebrations would start in October in every elementary school.
